With the onslaught of tons of media player coming out from China it can only mean us as a consumer will benefit from this.  But the consumer needs to know which are the crappy ones and which are the exceptional ones.  Today we be looking at the HiMedia HD300D Media Player. What different from this media players from the other is that this player has a DVD drive. Would have prefer a bluray drive instead but I guess the price of the unit will be much more expensive.  The player also does not come with any hard drive internally neither is there a place for one in this model . I believe the Model HD-300C will be able to accept hard drives internally.

Obviously with out a hard drive build in, you will only be able to use the dvd, memory slots, or a external hard drive using its two USB ports. One of the USB is infront and the other other at the back of the player

Normal standard connections are given and more (network connection).  In order to use my media files for testing I be connecting, through USB, my Dvico 6500A and a external Buffalo 500gb 2.5″ Hard drive.

There 4 color buttons on the remote to help u choose USB, Memory Card, DVD player or Hard drive.  Upon pressing the USB button you will come face to face with the menu on top.  The menus are very fast and responsive.

There is also another button on the remote “setup”.

In the TV system I be able to choose maximum 1080p 50hz and 1080p 60hz. Usually my tv will be able to inform me that 24hz mode is running, however even when the 24hz mode on the Himedia player is activated, there is no warning on my tv that its on.  The rest of the menu is standard.

Playback

Using the Realtek Chip 1073 processor I was eagerly interested in finding how this chip fair with the older sigma processor found on the Dvico 6500/7500.  After plugging my external hard drive and clicking on USB on the menu I will get this screen.

Once you inside the u will get a directory of files or folder which u are able to scroll and choose which u want to play. What I don’t like here is that the files are not in full and you got to wait for it to scroll sideways to see what the files is or wait for it to appear on the right hand.

Media files selection

While playing clicking on subtitles on the remote will get you this screen. You able to change the size of the subtitles (which was very big on default) to whatever size u want).

While the media files is playing and hitting the seek button on the remote you are able to choose by time, chapter (if any) and title (if any) to any frame in the movie…

Hitting the seek button one more time while in this mode u will find another seek method..

I like this method. Its fast where u used the directional key on the remote and move the cursor to where u want to view. As seen below:

Ok now thats over back to what we all been waiting for. What this player can do.  I tried every file I have on this machine and this player manage to play all of them without any problems. VC-1 which gave problems in many player ran without a hitch. MKV 108oP high bit rate no problemo.  High 1080i n 720p ts. and tp. files came out with flying colors. Even scenes like “the fifth element” cityscape highway scene played without a single slowdown.  Very impressive machine.

I did however notice the picture is a bit grainier and less brighter than the Dvico6500a. But this could be settings I need to adjust, since my TV is already set for the Dvico. DTS is downmix on the fly to the TV without any problems through your normal audio cables or HDMI.

Now to bluray playback. I did not try ISO format yet as I all my files are in BDMV format for the dvico.  One irratating thing about the menu system is that when i direct the cursor on to a BDMV folder there is a delay. In that delay i am not able to do anything until the filename pops out on the right. As shown below:

In the video above please ignore the confirm pop up screen. Its a automatic bookmark function which triggers if you replay the file again.  Just to get this out of the way first, the HIMedia is able to play bluray files but without the Menu functions.  HImedia will the fancy bluray menu system with a simpler default menu system by the player. What do you mean by that. Heres the example.

Blade runner – Bluray Rip. When you choose the folder this is what will pop out.

So simple and easy. No failures at all. Actually there is one failure, the machine cannot play a folder with dvd files (straight rip). I find this quite wierd as its had a dvd player next to it. However ISO format dvd rips has no problems. Maybe problem with firmware.

Network

I plug the network cable to the player and check whether it can detect upnp servers. However it did not. Looks like for samba server will not be a problem.

Conclusion

I find this Himedia very interesting in the fact it plays everything under the sun without any problems at all. Notice i didn’t talk anything about the DVD player. Its old school and it such a waste they didn’t a bluray player instead. The player was very easy to setup almost effortless.  Of course i didn’t like how the menu system for large files like BDMV folder had a slowdown in making your choices. Picture quality is quite stunning on high definition media, however my tv might not be set up for this machine as it was a bit dim and a slight grain, but still i think its my settings on the tv than the machine.  Hopefully I be able to get a AcRyan to compare it too. Until than the Himedia player is highly recommended player.
