HDX BD-1, Dvico 6500A, A.C. Ryan POHD

Do we have a new champion to dethrone the Dvico 6500A? A new champion has to play all Bluray rips, either ISO or BDMV without problems, Network playback without stuttering, among other simple things totally seamless playback of MKV and AVIs and all this for a affordable package to boot.  To many wannabe kings has been release and none have yet shown any potential yet to make me want to dump my DVICO 6500A.

Introduction

One of the things I been looking forward with this media player is the introduction of the new Sigma Designs SMP8642 Chip.  Sigma chip tend to display very pleasing picture quality with any media files that you feed through it.

Also according to Dune Prime websites regarding the sigma chip ; “Our 3.0 solutions are based on Sigma Designs 8642 chip, not on the 8643 one. We’d like to remind that every odd version of Sigma chips is a functionally reduced variant of the chip with the _previous_ even number (i.e. 8643-8642. 8635-8634, …). Odd versions inc. 8643 and 8635 are never meant for playing any copyright-protected materials (like Blu-ray and DVD) and are mostly meant for cheap IPTV/VoD set-top-boxes. For example, Macrovision support is enabled in 8642 chips and disabled in 8643 ones. So only Dune players on 8642 chip have no limitations with output of protected video through analog video interfaces. Also 8643-based players can not be legally sold in any AV-stores as Blu-ray players (for example, with some preinstalled Blu-ray drive), for Dune BD players there is no such limitation and you’ll be able to find them not only in Internet.”

This makes an interesting  case as we suspect the 8642 chip will be able to play most media files including  full bluray rip or bluray disc without problems.  The prospect of adding a BLURAY rom to the unit makes it very, very interesting machine.

HDX-BD1 Build

From the back of the HDX-BD1, we can see all the standard connection that most media player has. Only thing that glaringly missing or added is a e-sata port, a reset button and a missing usb master input (ac ryan has them on the side of the casing).

Back Of HDX-BD1

The Casing is very small compare with the other media player. Small and compact and yet it is able to receive a 3.5″ hard drive into the casing. Again I was so used in using a screw driver to open the casing to add the drive that i didn’t realise you just need to slide the side of the casing for it to reveal a cavity.  There are no LED in front to show time or files being played.

Digital Decode

Internal: The machine will decode any DTS sounds to stereo to play back on your TV by normal composite cables.

SPDIF Bypass: DTS sounds will bitsream to a amp that will decode into surround sound. You have the choice of using Co-axial or fiber optics cables.

HDMI Bypass .. all sound will bitstream out through the hdmi cables from the media machine to a amp which will decode into the corresponding sound. This mode will let you hear DTS-MA and HD sounds.

Video Mode

Video Mode

What stand out here is the Play mode. Setting it to ” General ”  will make the BD1 read any BLuray or DVD roms or ISO format as a folder directory mode. You will be able to enter into the stream directory to find the largest M2ts files to manually select them.

Choosing directoryManually choosing

”Intelligent play” the file will play straight away without going into a menu and will have a basic menu

system for your directions.

”BD navi” the media player will play the ISO or rom with full menus system just like a Bluray player or DVD player.

Hitting the web browser icon will bring straight to this page. (version 4.8 firmware will direct you to google page). Using the remote to enter text and cursor movement is almost impossible. Plug in a mouse and a keyboard to the usb port and you got a very capable web browser on your hands.

Remote Control

EXcellent idea in adding a backlight on the remote. But the backlights off itself to fast to make a big difference when your lighting conditions is completely dark.

Hi there! I’ve just noticed that your blog appears it’s got a few code errors on the side of the web page. I wonder if other folks are getting this same difficulty when surfing around? I’m utilizing a different web browser then most visitors therefore i don’t know if that is producing the situation.
